The customer or your vehicle may experience a rough idle or stall with a check engine light with the code PO171. The most common suggestion will be to clean the MAF sensor hot wire which is a good idle because this is also a common problem.
The parts stores now sells a spray for the MAF sensor to help clean it.
However if that doesn't work another common problem is the PCV valve on the passenger side behind the intake that leaks and you may not hear it because the hose that goes to the PCV valve sucks in preventing the normal hissing noise you would hear in most occasions.
Trouble Shooting Tip:
If you are a shop you should have a
Smoke Diagnostic Machine one of the best tools you can have when it comes to troubleshooting a vacuum leak.
If you do not have a smoke machine stick your hand back there and feel for a soft or collapse hose or sometimes you can hear a sucking noise from a water bottle.
I mean a good stream of water -SO DON'T BE CHEAP with the water.
This vehicle came into shop that failed an emission test, also the vehicle had a check engine light and the customer also complain about stalling and a surge at idle.
We hook up a scan tool and the Long Term Fuel Trim was a positive 25, indicating a lean mixture.
Ford troubleshooting Fix:
The fix for this vehicle was a pcv valve but listen to this it came in with a new PCV so what i did was disconnect the vacuum hose going to the PCV AND Plugged it The long Term fuel trim dropped to near zero.
This particular vehicle PCV has a special way it sits so be careful if it doesn't sit right you will still have the same problem.
So we replace the PCV with one from the Dealership and made sure it sat correctly, the car idle better and it pass the emissions / smog test.
